Commercial traffic on the Gloucester- Sharpness Canal

Collision at Sandfield Bridge

By Peter Harrison

Here is a photo that I took in September 1976. I was standing near Sandfield Bridge at Saul watching the Tor Bay loading at the Grain Store. The coaster was tied up firmly to the quayside but as the Nordic Clover approached the displacement of the water caused  the Tor Bay to be sucked out towards the middle of the canal and its mooring ropes began to snap - it sounded just like gunshots going off. There was a minor collision but there didn't appear to be any damage and the Nordic Clover went on it's merry way to Gloucester
