I really enjoyed reading this account of childhood days in Purton. I found the article by chance, then realised it was written by no lesser person than my cousin John.

John you have summed things up beautifully. I was a little younger than you, well I still am.  Nonethless I remember your memories. One little thing. I loved sitting on the lavatroy outside. I well remember cows coming to look at me over the hedge. Also the days when Uncle Bill would empty the bucket of swill from the loo. We know what that was a euphemism for! May I add a personal memory of Gran yelling "Bill get me a chicken" Uncle Bill would walk to the bottom of the garden where the chickens roamed, catch one and wring it's neck. The poor thing would then run around for a few seconds not knowing it was dead.
